So I'm going to tell you about the initial ideas for Aurora and how the prologue came about.
As I said in the previous post about reading A Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It really got me thinking and with that and the slew of other fantasy books I had read over the years, ideas popped into my head. I always loved the action scenes, sword fights, axe fights with magic mixed in there as well. But I loved how a fantasy story created these worlds that were different to our own, worlds that looked and felt alien to us. That's what drew me in (as I'm sure with a lot of you) the world building.
So, as ideas came to me I wrote them down: a barren world ravaged by war, a desperate people trying to find their way, a selfish and twisted king (one of many) and this started to form a story that I could piece together.
These ideas turned into a story of betrayal. Of kings and queens at the height of their power and how after a great battle it crumbled into ruin.
And this is where I found a love of writing fight scenes. Detailed and full of grit and blood. I couldn't believe how it came out onto the page. The ideas just flowed out with a little nudge.
So, I was happy with the start. The first draft came in about 2k words and from there I learnt how to flesh out the characters and add details here and there and how to write a story in general. I wrote it and rewrote it several times and I realised that it would make a great prologue for the story I actually wanted to write. And it turned out to be a nearly 3k word prologue that sets the scene for Aurora 900 years later.
So, to cap it off, my first real story turned into the prologue for Aurora and her adventures in Kankor which will span multiple books and short stories. But these characters will not be forgotten. I have a novella drafted for the events directly after which will come out between books one and two and a good few ideas about revisiting them as their younger selves also.
So that's it, I'll leave you there and thank you for reading the ramblings of a fantasy writer.
